Family Name Signs

A personalized family name sign, also called a last name sign, a surname sign or an established sign, puts your last name, and usually the year your family began, on the wall where everyone comes in. Ours have raised 3D letters on a stained wood board or inside a wood frame, and are cut and finished to order in our family workshop. They make a housewarming or closing gift, a wedding or anniversary present, or a Christmas gift for the whole family.

Styles

• Framed family name sign: black raised script on a white backer inside a Jacobean, Hazelnut, Black or Natural frame.
• Script last name sign: one flowing family name with your date beneath it.
• Block letters: first names in script above a tall block-capital last name and your date.
• Outlined family name sign: a thin raised outline around first names, last name and date.
• Family monogram sign: a tall portrait board with a large initial, the family name and the date.
• Family established sign: both first names with a small raised heart, the family name and the date.
• Merry Christmas family sign: your family name under “Merry Christmas”, with one of nine small icons.

Sizes, colors and where to hang it

Most styles come in two sizes: Medium, 22.8 × 9.5 in (58 × 24 cm), for a shelf, a mantel, the wall above a door or a narrow console, and Large, 27.5 × 12.6 in (70 × 32 cm), for a wide entry wall or the space above a sofa, a bed or a sideboard. The monogram is a portrait board, 24 × 16 or 32 × 22 in (height × width), and fits a narrow entryway wall. The unframed signs come in 12 wood colors and 8 letter colors, with a sawtooth hanger included; the framed signs hang from a slot in the back.

Last name signs for the home

A last name sign keeps it simple: your family name in raised letters and a date, such as the year you married or moved in. The script last name sign is just that, one flowing name over a ruled date line. For a bolder look, the block letter sign sets your last name in tall capitals under both first names in script. Both hang from the sawtooth hanger on the back, in the entryway, over the mantel or above a doorway.

Christmas family name signs

The Merry Christmas family name sign has “Merry Christmas” in raised script, your family name along the bottom bar and one small icon, from a reindeer to a star. It comes out with the decorations every December; any other style makes a Christmas gift that stays up all year. What goes on a family name sign?

Usually your last name and a date; some styles add both first names, a single initial or two short lines. “Est.” means established: your wedding year, the year you moved in or another date that matters to you. “The Smiths” or “The Smith’s”?

For a family, the plural has no apostrophe: The Smiths, The Joneses. “The Smith Family” works too. We cut every sign exactly as typed.

Can a family name sign hang outside?

No, they are made for indoors. Keep yours out of direct sunlight and moisture.
