The short answer
Start with the last name, then add one thing that dates it: an "Est." year, a full date or both first names. Choose the style by the lines you want, then the size by the wall: Medium for a shelf, a mantel or above a door, Large for a wide wall. Type every line exactly as it should read, because we cut what you type.
What goes on a family name sign
- The last name. Every sign has it. Decide the form first: "The Walkers", "The Walker Family" or simply "Walker".
- First names. Both first names ("Taylor & Brandon") make the sign about a couple; without them it belongs to the whole family.
- An established year. The year of the wedding, the year you moved in or the year the family began. "Est. 2026" reads cleanly from across a room.
- A full date. "April 12, 2025" is more personal than a year, and suits a wedding or anniversary gift.
- An initial. One large letter, the first of the family name, is the center of a monogram sign.

Two small things decide whether a sign reads right. A plural family name takes no apostrophe: "The Walkers", never "The Walker's". Names ending in s, x, z, ch or sh add -es ("The Joneses"), and if that looks odd, "The Jones Family" avoids it. The date appears exactly as you type it, so choose "Est. 2026", "EST. 2026" or "est. 2026" on purpose.

Framed family name sign
The framed family name sign has the strongest contrast: raised black script on a white backer, in a Jacobean, Hazelnut, Black or Natural frame that hangs from a slot in the back.
Script last name sign
The last name sign keeps to one idea, the family name in flowing script with no first names, which suits the wall above a doorway.
Block letters family name sign
On the block letters sign the last name stands in tall capitals with the date between two rules, the boldest of the styles.
Outlined family name sign
The outlined sign frames everything in a thin raised line, a clean, modern piece for an entryway or a gallery wall.
Family established sign
The family established sign is built around a couple, with a small raised heart between the first names. Because it carries the date, it makes an easy wedding or anniversary gift.
Family monogram sign
The monogram sign is the only portrait board, and it fits a narrow entryway wall where a wide sign would not. It comes in one lettering style, so there is no font to pick.
Merry Christmas family sign
On the Merry Christmas sign the words "Merry Christmas" are part of the design; you choose the family name and one of nine icons: reindeer, fox, cat, rabbit, stocking, snowflake, star, gift or tree. It comes out with the decorations every December.
Sizes and where to hang it
Six of the seven styles come in two sizes, width × height:
- Medium, 22.8 × 9.5 in (58 × 24 cm): a shelf, a mantel, the wall above a door or a narrow console.
- Large, 27.5 × 12.6 in (70 × 32 cm): a wide entry wall, or above a sofa, a bed or a sideboard.
The monogram sign is a portrait board: Medium 24 × 16 in (61 × 41 cm) and Large 32 × 22 in (81 × 56 cm), height × width.
Hang the sign at about eye level, or with its lower edge a hand's width above the furniture beneath it. The unframed signs have a sawtooth hanger on the back. Every style is made for indoors: hang it in the entryway rather than outside the front door, away from direct sunlight and moisture, and dust it with a soft dry cloth.
Wood colors and letter colors
The six unframed styles come in 12 wood colors and 8 letter colors, including metallic finishes, and the letter color covers every raised piece, outline, heart and icon included. Wood is a natural material: grain and tone vary a little from board to board, so the swatches and photos are a close guide, not an exact match.
As a Christmas, housewarming or wedding gift
- Christmas: the Merry Christmas sign, or any style with the year the family began, for a sign that stays up all year.
- Housewarming: the year they moved in, "The Parkers, Est. 2026". The framed, script and block letters signs also work as a realtor's closing gift.

Can I choose the font?
On the framed, script, block letters, outlined and established signs, yes: there are six font styles to compare. The monogram and Merry Christmas signs come in one lettering style.
Can I see the design before you make it?
Yes. Ask for a free digital proof and we email it within a business day. You have 48 hours to approve it or ask for changes; if we don't hear back, we go ahead with the proof you saw so your order keeps moving.
What if I spot a typo after ordering?
Write to us within 6 hours of placing your order and we change the names, date, size or color free of charge. After that your sign may already be cut, so read your entries twice before you order.
Should a family name sign have an apostrophe?
Not for the family name itself. "The Walkers" means the Walker family; "The Walker's" means something belongs to one Walker. An apostrophe only belongs on a sign that says whose something it is, and then it goes after the s: "The Walkers' Home". Names ending in s take -es ("The Joneses"), or you can write "The Jones Family".
How do we write a hyphenated or double last name?
Exactly as the family writes it, hyphen included: "The Garcia-Lopez Family" or "Garcia Lopez". We cut what you type, so if you are unsure how a long name will sit on the board, ask for a free digital proof and you will see it before anything is cut.
What does Est. mean on a family sign?
Est. is short for established: the year the family began. Usually that is the wedding year; for a housewarming, the year they moved in works just as well. Write it exactly as it should read: "Est. 2026", "EST. 2026" or "est. 2026".
Can a family name sign hang outside?
No. Every style we make is for indoors. Hang it inside the entryway, where guests see it as they come in, away from direct sunlight and moisture.
